I’m chugging though Enterprise…

Because I never gave it a chance when it came out and I was suffering through Trek withdrawl after finishing DS9.  I’ve made it to season 3 and yeah….it’s still kinda shitty.  Very few characters appeal to me.  All of the females are pretty terrible. It’s treatment of women in general is pretty fucking atrocious. I really, really hate T’Pol which is sad because she could have been awesome.  All the characters have their moments of being okay.

Dr. Phlox is my favorite I think.  Porthos is the best.  Yes.  The captains dog is the best.

Everyone is just so….dead in this show.  I get sparks of caring for them here and there but overall I am not invested in anyone or the mission.

The writers seem to be trying to make season 3 more interesting by throwing them in the wackyness of this expanse.  In Trek, when you can’t rely on character development, you throw them into weird and challenging space situations I guess :/.

Sad because this show has some great bits to it.  The youngness of the technology is fascinating.  How everyone is afraid of the transporter and with good reason.  The relationship between the Vulcans and the Humans.  The discovery of “new” species and places.  The lack of a Prime Directive especially. The emphasis on humans and their journey into the cosmic community that gives a real “humanity pride” feeling to everything. How they go out of their way to create more interesting CG aliens.  How the Enterprise is basically a tin can floating around in space.  How they’re outmatched by pretty much everyone.

There are good things.

But I just can’t care. I thought it would come but it hasn’t. :<

I’m determined to get through this dammit.

I actually stopped watching this crappy show in season 3 at some point. Came back for season 4 but saw little to no improvement. Rather the opposite because they desperately tried to make it fit into the time line for a change and screwed up even more/made it even more ridiculous.

And by the way… Porthos is my favorite character as well. He#s the only one who actually has personality. The others are just cardboard cutouts. (Except for Phlox sometimes, maybe.) Or cardboard cutouts in catsuits and with huge boobs. Bleh.

Yeah Phlox has more “oh I like him” moments than any other character but he’s no Doctor.  I guess I’d compare him more to Neelix, who is still better than Phlox.

They really do better at assigning personality to Porthos lol.  I know more about his quirks than any other character.  I can’t even remember the names of some of the characters and I’m in season 3.  That says alot for this show.  I should be more invested in someone other than the dog.  The only episode that really touched me was the Night In Sickbay one where Porthos got sick and Archer was all distraught.  I feel like Archer could be a great, likable captain if he was given a better writer especially given who plays him.  Instead, I connect with him the most when it comes to his dog.  wtf.

They try so desperately to make T’Pol this show’s Seven and fail miserably. She’s like a cardboard cutout of a swimsuit model that they’ll trot out every other episode and try to assign personality and backstory to but then they’ll throw her into the decontamination room to be all oiled up and that trumps everything else.  Not that it’s hard because they haven’t tried to make T’pol interesting past “Vulcan that sometimes FEELS because HUMANS are just that amazing and she also doesn’t care when she’s seen nearly naked by all her male colleagues.” When you compare her to say, Tuvok, she’s incredibly shallow.

A character that isn’t supposed to show emotions can’t feel anything about being objectified. (I think I could write just on this and I might lol)  She is forbidden fruit that doesn’t give a damn that’s how she’s seen so you can pretty much treat her however you want as a writer.  Lazy, lazy writers.

If I were more of a writer, I would totally just reboot this whole show as a comic or something (as a fan project) and give it the care it deserves.  I bet someone has done it….

Also, adding more instruments to the opening theme in Season 3 doesn’t fix that it’s pretty awful though it’s not as bad as the Firefly opening song lolol.

“You’re a Ferengi.  Why would you want to be in Starfleet?  Where’s the profit in it?!”

“I don’t care about profit!”

“Then what do you care about?  Come on Nog, tell me!  Why is it so damned important that you get into Starfleet? Why are you doing this?!”

“Because I don’t want to end up like my father!

DS9 Season 3, Ep 14 Heart of Stone

——

I really dig how DS9 goes into Ferengi characters more than just “Those weird guys with the ear fetish we run into every now and then you can’t trust at ALL EVER.”

“Even after it became clear that I was sentient, the Bajoran scientists kept calling me that.  As a joke.  They split it into two words.  Like a Bajoran name.  ‘Odo Ital’ which eventually got shortened to ‘Odo’.  But the thing is, for the longest time, whenever anyone would use my name the first thing I would think of was what it meant - ‘nothing’.  What better way to describe me?  I had no family, no friends, no place where I belonged.  I thought it was the most appropriate name anyone could give me. And then I met you…and the others - Sisko, Dax, even Quark.  Now when I hear one of you call me ‘Odo’ I no longer think of myself as nothing.  I think of myself as me.” — Season 3, Ep 14 Heart of Stone

Yeah so I was watching Star Trek Voyager and this shot of Tom Paris reminded me of yet another daring and talented sci-fi pilot who enjoys wearing hideous shirts…

So does this mean Wash’s wardrobe is a nod to Paris? They do also have an affinity for toys and things from their childhood, and their wives are very similar, and they’re both the helmsman on their respective ships…

My mind is blown. Joss, you’ve done it again.

I KNOW RIGHT?! They would be BEST FRIENDS, or rivals lol. The similarities in wardrobe could just mean they both have ridiculously kitschy taste (which they do) and those shirts…they get no kitschier XD
